In response to the recent incident at Twin Creeks Elementary School, the San Ramon Police Department in conjunction with the San Ramon Unified School District, would like to remind everybody to speak with their children about firearms safety and reporting suspicious activities right away. Every year, nearly 300 children age 17 and under gain access to a gun and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else, and nearly 500 more die by suicide with a gun. Many of these deaths are preventable with responsible gun storage. There are many websites dedicated to gun safety education. One great site is “Be Smart” (http://besmartforkids.org). This site is a great resource to help parents have a conversation with their children regarding gun safety. This site uses the acronym SMART as an easy reminder for gun safety

-
